The Greek Lapis

Picture
There's not much mention of the Lapis in Ancient Greece, but I'm convinced that it must have been around somewhere. The closest that I can find to it is the mention of the "Jupiter Stone", or Iuppiter Lapis . That stone was worshipped as a focus for the god Jupiter, who was god of the skies and thunder.

Whilst I've got no definite evidence for the connection between my lapis and the Iuppiter lapis, I still can't help thinking that any piece of rock associated with a weather god can't be barking too from from the right tree. And yes, there is an entire chapter in my thesis about this, if you're ever in the mood to read it when it's done.

The image is a sketch from a 1900s journal of something apparently found on a pot in a dig at Athens in 1896. It's not conclusive proof of anything, but the glyph looks rather familiar, don't you think?
